A Little Bit of Baytown Headed to Wisconsin"
By Christopher James

The Big Takeover magazine; issue 78, page 108
Review of Chemical Alley Discharge and The Drafted 7" EP, by Jack Rabid

Text transcription (sic): Going since 2003, these older punkers from gulf-coastal Exxon refinery Baytown, 26 miles east of Houston, sound like Fat EP Descendents, complete with three songs less than 10 seconds; they should cover "Weinershnitzel." But like Milo Aukerman's bunch, they're hooky/riffy at high speeds, closer to Minor Threat and Texas forebears The Dicks than MDC. Likewise, their lyrics are smart/funny lefty lampoons. Snorting at Nancy Grace and Ted Nugent is comic low hanging fruit, but sending up "Drill Baby Drill" Sarah Palin with oil's scourge in their faces/noses, and taking on Civil War apologists in their Southern surrounds on "Burn the Confederate Flag" with satire is a hoot as well as clenching music--and great instruction from a public school teacher (leader/last original Craig Stanley). Aphoristic: "Mine eyes have seen the hatred/Disguised under something called southern pride... You lost, get over it." The 7" EP is four songs from the album.

"The Drafted are a real gem -- an uncanny blend of nimble jazz, ferociously keen politics, and punk rock nerve, a true hybrid of the genre that needs more much love..."

Review: The Drafted "Killing Spree for Democracy" demo by David Ensminger

Modern hardcore with an acute dollop of jazz leanings that would make Dillinger Escape Plan and The Refused take notice. Plus, their socio-political tirades are caustic and barbed, taking aim at U.S. foreign policy (Iran), the governator of Texas (Rick Perry), economic woe, and low-wage job hell (Wal-mart). This links them to earlier era agit-punkers like Dead Kennedys and MDC as well. A finely-honed effort from chemical alley youth that started back in 2003 and survived much flux."

LastFm user comment:
"the punk and hardcore scene in my town is probably the best it's ever been... there's never been very much of a punk movement in small rural cowtowns like that of baytown, texas. there's a handful of lame 'emo' type bands, but the scene mostly revolves around the Drafted." [sic]
